  Four of us did a one-way hire from Boofzheim to Hesse in mid-June - a month which proved to be one of extreme weather and we had the lot! Our cruiser was large and comfortable, with a very spacious stern cabin - the forecabin however was rather cramped and had an interesting shower arrangement!
  We were deluged on our first day going into Strasbourg, and although the locks are automatic (excellent system), we still had to stand out in the rain holding ropes etc. and consequently were soaked to the skin. Mooring in Strasbourg was easy at the marina, but quite expensive (no competition!), and there are no shower/toilet facilities there. It was quite a long walk into the Old Town, but well worth the effort. Trams are available which we used on our return. There is a small Carrefour supermarket about half a mile away across the pretty park opposite the marina.
  We were there the week before the Brexit vote, and took a river trip to see the European Parliament buildings. Quite glad we did that then, or we would have been embarrassed in front of our fellow tourists!!
  On from Strasbourg, the countryside becomes more interesting and very pretty in places. We stopped at Saverne (lovely position for mooring), and sampled its quaint streets and the rose gardens. From then on the weather suddenly upgraded and by the time we reached Lutzelbourg, the thermometer hit 37C! But we had a shady mooring there, and it was a very peaceful and pleasant spot for an overnight stay. Beautiful scenery with wooded hillsides and valleys.
  Our last day was spent enduring the heat, but being very thrilled and amazed by the boat lift at St-Louis-Arzviller - quite an experience. We moored up in Hesse for our last night and had a delightful meal at the little restaurant next door to the marina.
  Overall, a great week, but we were very glad we did the one-way trip the way we did as the scenery was definitely much more interesting beyond Strasbourg. We had organised ourselves to drive from one location to another to collect cars etc. so did not need to make use of Le Boat's assistance.
  However, the staff at Boufzheim did not speak much English (as we were told they did in the literature we had received), and I was very tested to understand all the information in French. We of course managed between us with the boss's smattering of English and much sign language! The man who came on board to show us the ropes spoke more English and was very helpful. We are all experienced boaters both with cruisers and on the English canals, but we did wonder how some complete novices would have fared with the language barrier.
  Overall a good week, and reasonable value for money. We had paid to hire a bimini top which we were very glad to have when the weather turned hot. The boat company staff were helpful and at Hesse spoke good English.
